Stories are made this way! The village is actually Javier Rojo Gómez. This place is a storytelling meca. Even the name of this place is a story – without verification! So a story goes, Jean Lafitte was a renowned 19th-century French pirate, privateer, and smuggler who dominated the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. He commanded a large fleet, plundered Spanish ships, and smuggled contraband/slaves. Known for aiding the USA in the War of 1812, his fortune and ultimate fate remain a mystery.
Legend has it that Capitán Lafitte was secretly married to an English woman by the name of Elizabeth Allen. To honor her family he named his ship The Allen. Lafitte would take refuge from his enemies and the weather in Ascension Bay. Back in the 1500s up until the late 1950s you could still sail a pirate ship through the reef all the way to Vigia Chico on the mainland to trade goods for fish, lobster and copra (the dried meat of the coconuts).
Once Blackbeard was driven from his ship for not sharing the gold taken from the raids on other ships, he hooked up with the Spaniards to go after Lafitte. Many believe the battle occurred just outside the lower entrance to Ascension Bay and the Allen ship was defeated and sunk – so that land became Punta Allen (Allen point entrance to Ascension Bay).
Another theory is that the cartographer who mapped the peninsula in the late 1950’s was named John Allen; and when he came to the end of the peninsula, he put his name on the point.
The old fisherman of the island say that the word ”Alem” is Maya slang for baby crocodile and was misspelled when the official maps of the region were published.
The village itself is called Colonia de Pescadores Javier Rojo Gomez, but the area overall is called Punta Allen. I don’t know if we will ever know exactly how it got its name. The stories are fun and to be enjoyed!
